SUMMARY:Joseph Banks\, Kew & the Plant Hunters
DESCRIPTION:Our speaker for the June meeting is the engaging Andrew Sankey\, who has previously talked to us about colour in the garden and garden design. In this presentation Andrew will talk about one of his botanical heroes\, Joseph Banks. Banks first came to fame as the botanist on Captain James Cook first voyage to the antipodes\, returning with many new plants not previously seen in Europe before. He was later tasked by King George III to establish a national botantic garden\, which he did in Kew botanic gardens and was the first unofficial director\, sending botanists around the world to collect plants\, making Kew one of the world's best botanic gardens. He was also the president of the Royal Society for 41 years. So come along to hear about this champion of botany and the natural world\, brought to life by Andrew's enthusiastic presentation.

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting - Botanical Gardens - A Grand Tour
DESCRIPTION:From the sixteenth century to the present day\, botanical gardens have been the epicentre of plant research and horticultural excellence. Set aside for science and education\, botanical gardens are also places of great beauty\, from magnificent avenues of flowering trees\, huge glasshouses filled with exotic tropical giants to the tiny and exquisite mountain-side plants in the cool alpine house.This presentation by Jim Paine of Walnut Tree Nursery explores the history and purpose of botanical gardens\, illustrated with beautiful images throughout\, and then takes a closer look at a handful of gardens\, from far distant continents to the world-class Royal Botanic Gardens Kew and the easily accessible University of Cambridge Botanical Garden.

DESCRIPTION:We have a three night/four day holiday for our members\, making a return visit to the Harrogate Autumn Flower Show at Newby Hall & Gardens\, which will take place from 18-20 September 2026.    Three nights dinner\, bed & breakfast accommodation has been reserved at The Parsonage Hotel\, Escrick near York by our coach company Avanti.  Cost for members £460 per person sharing a twin/double room (£480 per person for affiliated society members) and £520 for a single person occupying a twin/double room (members only\, limited availability). Discount for National Trust and RHS members. \nItinerary: \nDepart from East Tuddenham Village Hall at 8am\, parking available.  . \nWednesday 16 September 2026\, 11.15am arrival: Doddington Hall\, Lincolnshire \nThursday 17 September 2026\, 11am arrival: full day at RHS Garden Harlow Carr \nFriday 18 September 2026 - full day at Harrogate Autumn Flower Show \nSaturday 19 September 2026 - depart from our hotel.  Visit to National Trust Nostell\, arriving at 10.30 and departing at 2pm. DESCRIPTION:Our September monthly meeting has Mark Mason speaking on Salvias for the 21 st Century. Mark has over fifty years experience in horticulture and is a key member of the Sudbury in Bloom team.With so many varieties of Salvias and given its extended flowering season\, Salvia has long been a favourite for adding colour to our gardens. Mark will be considering the role of the Salvia in our 21st century gardens\, telling us about its various botanical and medical roles\, and showing us how to prune and take cuttings. Mark will also bring some plants for sale.
