So with excellent timing the club has booked commercial seed expert Jason Breed to give a presentation all about seeds. Jason's presentation entitled 'Sow to Grow' will give attendees the inside story on the production\, preparation and storing of seeds and how to get the most success in germination from your seeds. Jason\, who is eastern area manager for Mole Seeds Ltd\, a supplier of seeds to the trade\, will also bring along seeds for sale. So if you are looking to get your garden off to a great start this year this is a meeting not to miss.

DESCRIPTION:A repeat visit to the Alpine Garden Society Early Spring Show and Plant Fair at Chelmsford Racecourse.  We've enjoyed it so much for the last couple of years that we have decided to go again! Avanti Coach Travel will be taking us. \nCost of coach travel is £25 for members and affiliated society members\, £35 for non-members.  We will depart from Hethersett Village Hall\, Back Lane\, Hethersett\, Norwich\, NR9 3JJ at 8am and arrive back at around 5pm. \nAlpine Garden Society members get free entry into the show\, non-members pay £8 on the door\, which is in addition to the coach costs and needs to be paid individually on the day.

SUMMARY:CHEMICAL WARFARE (and cooperation) IN THE GARDEN
DESCRIPTION:Plants can’t talk but they do communicate with the world around them for their survival. But they also need to defend themselves against predators who might look at them as potential lunch. This fascinating presentation by Gwenda Kyd\, a chemist by training\, who has specialised in herbal medicine\, explores how plants communicate\, whether it is plant-plant\, plant-insect or plant-human interactions. We’ll learn how plants help each other using chemical signals but also chemically protect the area they’re growing in from encroaching neighbours. Also how they use chemical compounds to attract the right sort of insects for pollination. Gwenda is the co-deviser of the 'Chemicals from Plants Trail' at Cambridge Botanic Gardens and author of several books including Molecules\, Medicines and Mischief and importantly an entertaining speaker.

DESCRIPTION:An opportunity to learn how to make a Hanging Basket with our society Vice Chair\, Simon White.  Simon will produce three different baskets and talk through the process.  Free admission to the demonstration and to our Spring Show from 10am to 4pm. \nIf you wish\, at the end of the demonstration you will be able to take away a free basket to produce your own Hanging Basket to enter in Class 99 at our Summer Show within the Garden Village Marquee at  the Royal Norfolk Show on 24-25 June 2026.  Baskets generously sponsored by Berrycroft Horticultural Supplies.

SUMMARY:Growing Pelargoniums
DESCRIPTION:Our speaker for the April meeting is Luci Skinner who has worked in horticulture for nearly 20 years. She is a former Manager and Director of Woottens Nursery in Wenhaston\, where she ran the propagation schedules for the nursery including the rare Pelargonium collection for which she holds the National Collection status for\, jointly with the nursery. Luci now runs her own gardening and plant advice business and has been giving talks for 10 plus years on a variety of different genus. Without doubt one of the best speakers on the circuit. So if you grow pelargoniums / geraniums or want to know more about them then you won’t want to miss this presentation.

DESCRIPTION:Alice Hunter is a specialist in wildlife & landscape photography. Growing up in rural Herefordshire she was always fascinated by nature and wildlife. Encouraged by her family Alice went on to win international competitions for her photographs. She contributes to the Wildscreen Exchange initiative to help conservation charities raise awareness of their causes. Alice leads wildlife photography tours for Greentours. Her talks are enjoyed by garden clubs as well as U3A.
