SUMMARY:AGS Norfolk Group talk by Tim Ingram on Gardening on Rocks
DESCRIPTION:Tim's talk is about all the many and varied plants\, especially alpines\, that grow well in a rock garden. He has a nursery in Faversham\, Kent called Copton Ash which focuses on Alpines & perennials for dryer & woodland gardens. Tim’s interest in plants began in his teenage years when he had a raised rock garden. Later while working in plant hormones he spent 6 months in Tasmania and took the opportunity to explore the wild. He has also\nwritten a book on Umbellifers for HPS. He grows a lot of Alpines in his garden in Kent.

DESCRIPTION:Our speaker for the May meeting is experienced Norfolk Beekeeper Lynda Hunt. Lynda will talk about what bee-friendly plants\, shrubs and trees you can plant in your garden that support Bees. If you want to learn more about which plants to grow in your garden – large or small - to encourage these crucially important pollinating insects (year round\, not just in high summer)\, then this is the talk to attend. Get ideas for what plants to buy & which nurseries or garden centres may sell them untreated with neonicotinoids (systemic insecticides which do not degrade\, therefore harming Bees). Lynda will give examples of the sorts of plants you can grow\, like Angelica\, which are not difficult to grow & low maintenance.

SUMMARY:Full day Outing to Burghley House Gardens
DESCRIPTION:A full day coach outing  on Thursday June 11th to the Gardens of Burghley House on the edge of Stamford. Burghley House Gardens are made up of several spectacular gardens including the sculpture garden\, Capability Brown's lost gardens and the highly entertaining garden of surprises - a sensory delight with the unexpected at every turn. In addition we should also get access to the private White garden\, as we have included a gardener-led tour of the gardens as part of the trip.The cost of the trip is £27.50 pp which includes coach fare and entry into the gardens with an escorted garden tour. The trip is open to members of NNHS and affiliated society members. SUMMARY:Joseph Banks\, Kew & the Plant Hunters
DESCRIPTION:Our speaker for the June meeting is the engaging Andrew Sankey\, who has previously talked to us about colour in the garden and garden design. In this presentation Andrew will talk about one of his botanical heroes\, Joseph Banks. Banks first came to fame as the botanist on Captain James Cook first voyage to the antipodes\, returning with many new plants not previously seen in Europe before. He was later tasked by King George III to establish a national botantic garden\, which he did in Kew botanic gardens and was the first unofficial director\, sending botanists around the world to collect plants\, making Kew one of the world's best botanic gardens. He was also the president of the Royal Society for 41 years. So come along to hear about this champion of botany and the natural world\, brought to life by Andrew's enthusiastic presentation.
